GTA 6 - The Age of Game Ownership is Dying

GTAGta 5GTA 6

Pre-orders go live tonight at midnight, and the full pricing details for GTA 6 have surfaced. $80 for the base game. $100 if you want the version where the in-game car shop actually exists. And "physical" now means a code in a box. November is gonna be rough on the wallet, folks.

Look, I'll give Rockstar some credit here. $100 for a fully-featured game built over the better part of a decade with an absurd amount of resources poured into it? Fine. What I can't stomach is knowing that every half-baked AAA publisher on the planet is watching this and licking their chops. You just know Call of Duty, EA, and the rest of the usual suspects are going to look at this price point and think their recycled, microtransaction-riddled garbage deserves the same treatment. They don't. But they'll do it anyway.

Now let's talk about the elephant in the room — there is no physical release. The game is going to be massive. Say goodbye to your hard drive space, and say goodbye to actually owning what you paid for. Rockstar already pulled a fast one with GTA 5 by ripping out licensed music years after launch because they couldn't be bothered to figure out long-term licensing deals. They had how long to sort this out? Over a decade of GTA Online printing money and they couldn't lock down the rights? Come on.

Here's the silver lining though — some retailers are pushing back. Video Games Plus, a store that's been in business nearly 40 years, says they won't stock GTA 6 because of the code-in-a-box decision. Their longstanding policy is to not carry "physical" games that are just download codes. Loot Box Gaming took a similar stance, framing it around preservation — if a product can't honor the people spending their hard-earned money on it, they won't sell it. Respect to both of them for standing on principle.

This is the future the industry wants. No ownership, no resale, no lending your buddy the disc. Just a receipt and a prayer that the servers stay up. We're paying more than ever for less than ever, and most people will shrug and hand over their credit card tonight anyway. Can't say I blame them — it's GTA 6. But let's not pretend this isn't a line being crossed.

Oh at least PS5 Pro is supposed to have a 60fps performance mode for GTA 6!
