In an era where publishers are practically sprinting away from physical media — slapping stickers on empty cases, shipping day-one patches the size of the actual game, or just quietly abandoning cartridge releases altogether — this is genuinely worth stopping to appreciate. Bethesda and Virtuos actually put the whole thing on the cart. That's not a small thing right now. That's a statement, even if it wasn't intended as one.
For the uninitiated, Oblivion Remastered launched in 2025 as a full visual overhaul of the beloved 2006 RPG, developed by Virtuos. It's a massive open-world adventure — one of the genre's most iconic entries — and now Switch 2 owners get to experience it for the first time on Nintendo hardware. The port targets 900p in handheld mode and 1080p docked, running at 30fps with DLSS doing some of the heavy lifting.
The original remaster had a rough launch on other platforms, and the community is watching this Switch 2 version closely. 30fps is the target, not a guarantee of a buttery-smooth experience, and "targets" have a way of becoming "aspirations" when Cyrodiil gets busy. Cautious optimism is the right energy here — not cynicism, but not blind hype either.
That said, the prospect of wandering through the Imperial City, stumbling into an Oblivion gate, or getting completely sidetracked by the Dark Brotherhood questline while sitting on your couch in handheld mode? That's genuinely exciting. Oblivion holds up in ways that are hard to explain until you're back in it. There's a warmth and weirdness to that world that no other Elder Scrolls game has quite replicated — and a whole new audience is about to find that out for the first time.
Oblivion Remastered launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 11. If you're going physical, the Deluxe Edition has everything on the cartridge. That alone makes it worth considering.
