Reset XBOX - Xbox Lays off 3,200

Asha SharmaDigital-Only Gaming

Microsoft is hitting the big red button. In what Asha Sharma, the current CEO of Xbox, is calling "the most significant restructure in XBOX history," approximately 3,200 roles are being eliminated throughout FY27, with 1,600 cuts happening immediately. Four studios are being shown the door to new management. This isn't a trim. This is a reset, and Asha said as much in an email to the entire company.

Here are the highlights from her message. She flat out admitted the business "is not healthy," operating at margins 3-10x lower than comparable platforms. She acknowledged that the bets on Game Pass, multi-platform expansion, and aggressive studio acquisitions did not pay out at the pace they expected. She said that for every dollar they invested, they lost 64 cents. That's a staggering admission from the head of one of gaming's biggest brands. Respect for saying it out loud.

Studios getting cut loose include Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs. Arkane France is under review. Meanwhile, Mojang and King now report directly to Asha because, and this is almost poetic, Minecraft and Candy Crush are apparently the crown jewels of this empire they spent billions building. All those acquisitions, all that money, and a block-building game from 2011 is carrying the weight. Let that sink in.

She's also flattening the org chart from as many as 14 layers of management down to 3-5, reducing vendor spend by 50%, and installing a new COO with full P&L responsibility. The bureaucratic bloat is getting torched. Good.

Now here's my take. I give Asha credit for calling it what it is. No corporate spin about "synergies" or "strategic realignment." She said the bets didn't work, the business is unhealthy, and they need to reset. That takes guts, especially in an industry where executives usually just collect bonuses while Rome burns. Reset Xbox. Fine. Do it.

But while you're resetting, Xbox, here's what gamers actually want. We want solid hardware at a price that reflects the hardware, not some gimmick-laden box with a subscription model baked into the cost. We want games that are finished when they ship. And for the love of everything, we want physical games. You're watching Sony announce the death of physical media for PlayStation starting January 2028 and seeing the internet absolutely torch them for it. KFC and Domino's are out here memeing about "digital-only pizza" because that's how absurd the push for all-digital feels to consumers. When fast food chains are dunking on your industry's business model, maybe listen.

And stop treating game development like a corporate assembly line. You can't put art on a quarterly earnings timeline. The best games in history weren't churned out to meet a fiscal year deadline. They were crafted. They took time. They had vision. You want Xbox to matter again? Give studios room to breathe, give players something to hold in their hands, and give us a reason to believe the brand stands for gaming again, not a subscription service with an identity crisis.

"History is full of companies that mistake longevity for inevitability." That's the line Asha closed with. It's a good one. Now prove it wasn't just a line.
