Eight years. It has been eight years since Bethesda dropped that teaser at E3 2018 — a camera panning over some mountains with a logo. That's it. That's what we've been surviving on. Rest in peace, E3. You died before this game even got a proper reveal.
But hey, we finally have something. Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty told Variety that he's actually seen The Elder Scrolls VI running in-engine. His words? "It looks amazing. And it's coming along well." He added that they'll "reveal it at the right time." Corporate speak for "not yet, peasants."
Todd Howard, in a February 2026 interview with Kinda Funny Games, echoed the sentiment — development is "going well" and the game is now fully playable. He also confirmed that the majority of Bethesda Studios is working full-time on it. Progress. Actual, tangible progress. Only took the better part of a decade.
So where does that leave us? The game is playable internally but still apparently a long way from release. Which means we're looking at — what — 2028? 2029? We're legitimately going to get GTA 6 before we get another Elder Scrolls. Let that sink in. Rockstar announced their game later and will ship it first. Against Bethesda. The simulation is broken.
We'll keep you posted when Todd decides we've earned another breadcrumb.
