It's happening. Bethesda Game Studios dropped a massive update on X today, and while there's a ton to unpack across their entire portfolio, let's cut straight to what you've been waiting over a decade to hear: The Elder Scrolls VI is their primary development focus, the majority of their team is working on it, and they are playing it every single day.
Let that sink in. "We're where we planned to be, loving how it looks, and playing it every day." That's a direct quote. For a studio that has been notoriously tight-lipped about ES6 since that teaser back in 2018, this is the most concrete confirmation we've gotten that this game is real, it's substantial, and it's moving forward at full speed.
Here's what else we know from the update: Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 are both being developed on Creation Engine 3, a shared tech platform they've been building since Starfield launched. Fallout 5 is in preproduction. Elder Scrolls VI is in active development with the bulk of the studio behind it. They explicitly called Fallout 5 "one of our biggest priorities," but then turned around and said ES6 is the primary development focus. Read between the lines here. This is their baby right now.
They also announced that ZeniMax Online Studios is partnering more closely with Bethesda Game Studios on The Elder Scrolls franchise as a whole. Whether that means shared resources, lore coordination, or something bigger remains to be seen, but it signals they're consolidating firepower around this IP.
No release date. No trailer. No gameplay footage. They're clearly taking the Rockstar approach here, keeping the lid tight until they're ready to blow the doors off. And honestly? After the mixed reception Starfield got, that's probably the smart play. GTA6 pre-orders are live right now with a November 19th release and Rockstar has barely shown anything beyond that initial trailer. Bethesda seems to be studying that playbook closely. Don't overpromise. Don't overhype. Just build the thing and let it speak for itself when the time comes.
We'll cover the Fallout news, the Starfield updates, and the Obsidian collaboration in separate posts. But for now, after years of radio silence and vague corporate non-answers, Elder Scrolls fans finally have something real to hold onto. The next chapter is coming. They're playing it. And it sounds like they love what they're seeing.
About time.
