We called it. Twice. (First here, then again here.) And now it's real. Bethesda has officially confirmed the title of the next Elder Scrolls game: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.
The reveal came today during a video celebrating Bethesda's 40th anniversary. Todd Howard called it the "perfect time" to fully name the game, and honestly, after eight years of nothing but a mountain flyover and corporate non-answers, he's not wrong. The teaser opens with the Bethesda Game Studios logo over a dusty, sandy landscape before revealing an ornate elder scroll partially buried in the sand.
Then the title card drops. Golden magical rings swirl around the words The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel on a black background. No gameplay. No cinematic trailer. Just the name. And for a fanbase that's been starving since 2018, that name hits hard.
For those who don't know their Elder Scrolls geography, Sentinel is a major city in Hammerfell, a province on the northwest coast of Tamriel along Iliac Bay. Hammerfell sits west of Cyrodiil (where Oblivion took place) and southwest of Skyrim. It's appeared before in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online, but it's never been the star of a mainline entry. That changes now.
The teaser also included a lore inscription that places the game's timeline five years after the events of Skyrim:
That date, 4E 206, is significant. Skyrim takes place in 4E 201. So we're looking at a story set just five years later, with a Moth Priest serving the High Queen of Hammerfell referencing the Elder Scrolls themselves. The inscription talks about "a future lost, a victory undone, sands of time scattered by fate." Bethesda has said this will be the first game about the history of the Elder Scrolls as artifacts, not just a game that happens to have them in the title. That's a big narrative shift.
This also confirms the leaks and speculation that have been building all year. Back in August, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma teased the subtitle using eight asterisks in a post. People immediately noticed "Sentinel" fit. Turns out the internet detectives were right on the money.
No release date. No platforms confirmed beyond what we already knew (Xbox Series X|S and PC). No gameplay. Bethesda is still running the Rockstar playbook: keep the lid tight, don't overpromise, let the game speak when it's ready. After the Starfield reception, that's probably the smartest thing they can do.
The community response on X tells the whole story. The announcement racked up over 2.4 million views and 53,000 likes within an hour, but scroll through the replies and you'll find a fanbase running on fumes. "15 years to release a name, nice." "Can't wait to see gameplay in 8 years." Someone edited the title card to read "SENILE" instead of "SENTINEL." One reply just posted a meme of a barely-started sculpture with the caption "We have made significant progress in 8 years." The excitement is there, buried under layers of exhaustion. People want to be hyped. They just don't have much to be hyped about yet. A name and a lore quote, after nearly a decade of silence, is a tough sell when you've been waiting this long.
We've been tracking this one for a while now. The breadcrumbs kept adding up, and today they finally gave us the whole loaf. Sentinel. Hammerfell. The Elder Scrolls, front and center. Now we wait for the real show. But at least we know what we're waiting for.
